In the depths of lungs, a struggle begins,
A battle for breath, as air grows thin.
Dyspnea, they call it, a medical term,
For the fight to breathe, the body's concern.

Air hunger grips with its relentless hand,
Chest tightening like an iron band.
Gasping and grasping for just one more breath,
A suffocating feeling, like brushing with death.

From mild to severe, it ebbs and it flows,
The cause of this strife, one hardly knows.
Asthma might whistle, COPD might wheeze,
Pneumonia could lurk, bringing unease.

The heart, once strong, may falter and strain,
Coronary arteries, blocked, cause pain.
Anxiety rises, panic takes hold,
As breathing becomes a task to behold.

Obesity weighs, making each breath a chore,
While physical exertion leaves one gasping for more.
High altitudes thin the life-giving air,
And anemia's grip leaves the body bare.

Acute it may come, like a thief in the night,
Or chronic it lingers, a persistent plight.
A warning sign, it should not be ignored,
Professional help should be quickly explored.

For in every breath, life's essence resides,
In the rise and fall of our chests, it abides.
So listen closely to the body's plea,
And seek out the cause of this dyspnea.
