In cells where life's blueprint fails to align,
A rare condition forms, silent, benign.
Phenylketonuria, known as PKU,
A genetic disorder in shades of blue.

No enzyme to guide phenylalanine's flight,
Without PAH, it's trapped in its height.
An amino acid, so common, yet dire,
Accumulates slowly, a brain set afire.

Foods like eggs, meats, and dairy abound,
In them, the culprit, phenylalanine, is found.
But for those with PKU, they must beware,
Of what they eat, with caution and care.

Untreated, the mind may not fully bloom,
Intellect and growth sink into gloom.
Behavior may spiral, seizures may rise,
Development slowed as time gently flies.

An autosomal recessive curse passed through,
Both parents must share this genetic clue.
A test at birth reveals the unseen foe,
A battle ahead, but hope can still grow.

A diet strict, low in protein's hold,
Lifelong vigilance, stories untold.
Sapropterin may offer relief's call,
Lowering levels, lessening the fall.

In early detection, the answer is clear,
To manage this path, dispelling fear.
PKU, a challenge both quiet and true,
But with care and love, life still blooms anew.
