In sudden storms of mind, confusion swirls,
Awareness fades, and clarity unfurls.
Attention splinters, focus drifts away,
In disarray, thoughts lose their stay.

Consciousness ebbs, a tide of night and day,
Speech turns chaotic, meanings slip away.
Hallucinations dance, illusions play,
In this bewildering, shifting, shadowed fray.

From infections' grip, or fever’s blaze,
Or metabolic tangles, consciousness decays.
Medications' shift, withdrawal’s cruel hand,
Trauma's aftermath in mind’s frail land.

Older age brings heightened chance to stray,
As chronic illnesses cloud the way.
Dementia’s whisper, stroke's cruel trace,
In ICU’s cold light, minds lose their place.

Diagnosis seeks with careful eyes,
In patient’s history, truth lies.
Cognitive tests reveal the hidden strand,
Lab tests uncover causes, understand.

To treat, we seek the root, the cause within,
Hydration, care, in calm begin.
Medications soothe when agitation roars,
In healing’s gentle touch, mind restores.

Reversible, this state with timely care,
Yet untreated, risks are laid bare.
Long-term impairments, dangers, rise,
In delirium's wake, a fragile prize.
