Fistula

Dec 29, 2024

Beneath the surface, where whispers hide,
A fistula forms, a secret divide.
Firstly, it connects what should not be,
Creating a path none wish to see.

For example, near the anal canal,
A tunnel emerges, a painful trial.
As pus may drain and swelling grows,
Thus, the discomfort only shows.

Meanwhile, veins and arteries intertwine,
An arteriovenous fistula aligns.
Though it may aid for dialysis flow,
Yet vibrations and swelling often grow.

Similarly, the skin and bowels unite,
An enterocutaneous fistula takes flight.
Because of surgery or infection’s mark,
Its drainage turns the skin dark.

Next, the rectum to the vagina connects,
A rectovaginal fistula leaves effects.
Consequently, childbirth trauma might bring,
Gas and stool where none should cling.

Moreover, the digestive tract may contend,
As gastrointestinal fistulas extend.
Although caused by Crohn’s or surgical plight,
These passages are no benign light.

Lastly, the trachea and esophagus meet,
A tracheoesophageal fistula repeats.
Since congenital flaws or cancer may cause,
Coughing disrupts life’s natural laws.

In conclusion, though fistulas may bind,
Treatment is sought to leave them behind.
Through surgery, medicines, or careful care,
Hope for healing lingers in the air.
